A former Pennsylvania high school football player is suing the school district for head injuries he sustained as a player. The 19-year-old man says he still experiences symptoms of brain injuries he incurred in multiple hits during football games.
The lawsuit claims that the school’s coach and trainer allowed the boy to continue playing after being involved in dangerous collisions in multiple games.
According to the complaint, the boy, who was 15 years old and a sophomore at the time, sustained serious head injuries after being involved in a number of collisions over three games. His family says one of the hits was a helmet-to-helmet collision with another player that left the 15-year-old clearly disoriented. He was allegedly walking aimlessly on the sideline after the hit, but the coaches put him back in the game despite concern from his teammates.
The complaint alleges that the boy’s coaches instructed him to go back in the game and block an opposing linebacker. The man can’t remember anything that happened during the game after that play.
The boy’s parents took him to the emergency room where he was diagnosed with a serious head injury.
According to the boy’s mother, his head injuries have dramatically altered his life. She says that since the last collision, her son has suffered from numerous symptoms including depression, insomnia, nausea and vomiting. The family says these symptoms disrupted the boy’s academic achievement. They say he missed a large part of the spring semester, and his schoolwork reportedly suffered.
Despite this, the complaint says school administrators let him pass by in classes and eventually allowed him to graduate even though he could barely complete his schoolwork.
A number of individuals associated with the school district were named as defendants in the lawsuit, including the principal, assistant principal, football coach and athletic trainer. The family is seeking more than $75,000 in damages.
